More Crypto
Due to the unusually high number of cryptosporidiosis cases this summer, health officials are advising caution before you go to Dallas area water parks and public pools. People with weakened immune systems, such as those who have undergone chemotherapy or has autoimmune diseases, pregnant women, and very young children should avoid public swimming areas.
Many public pools and water parks are hyperchlorinating as a precautionary measure. Cryptosporidium protozoans have only been found in Burger's Lake (which has been treated and is open again), but people who haven't been to Burger's Lake have come down with cryptosporidiosis. To avoid infecting other people, don't go in the water while ill or recently ill. Don't change diapers near the pool -- germs can get on surfaces, then onto people from casual contact, then into the water when people go swimming.
To avoid becoming infected, don't swallow water that people swim in -- that includes lakes and rivers as well as public pools and water parks. Wash your hands with soap and clean water after getting out of the water and before handling food.
