Labor Day Weekend

Wednesday August 27, 2008

Labor Day weekend is always fun around here. The weather is predicted to be in the 90s with isolated thunderstorms, but that's still a few days out. We'll see what it's like when it gets here.

WRR's Picnic in the Park kicks off at 7 p.m. with patriotic tunes from the Dallas Wind Symphony, followed by a family-friendly movie at 8:30 p.m. Concessions will be available or bring your own picnic and cooler. Bring a blanket to sit on the lawn. The Picnic in the Park is being held at the Dallas Arboretum (8525 Garland Road). Admission to the arboretum and parking are free on Aug 31 after 5:30 p.m.

Cross Canadian Ragweed's Red Dirt Roundup in the Fort Worth Stockyards promises a line-up of bands on two stages. Tickets cost $40 at the gate or $30 advance. No outside food or beverages are allowed in the event, but there are plenty of excellent restaurants in the Stockyards (re-entry is allowed) and there will be food sold inside the event. Bring a lawnchair for seating.

Lake Arlington is waiving boat access fees for canoers and kayakers over Labor Day weekend. The Lake Arlington paddling trail is 10.9 miles long and has three entry/exit points at Richard Simpson Park, Bowman Springs Park, and Eugene McCray Park.

Of course, you can always participate in the classic Labor Day activities and barbecue in your backyard and hit all the sales.
