Here's a smattering of free stuff to do in Dallas and the surrounding area for Sep 11-Sep 17:
Thu, Sep 11- 7 p.m., watch Kurt Russell in “Escape from New York” at CentralTrak (800 Exposition Avenue, near Fair Park) in Dallas.
- 8 p.m., meet author Thomas L. Friedman (Hot, Flat, and Crowded; The World Is Flat; and more) at the Texas Hall (701 W. Nedderman Drive) on the campus of the University of Texas at Arlington. A book-signing follows. Admission is free, but tickets are required to reserve your space.
- 8 p.m.-10 p.m., watch a juggler with a family-friendly sense of humor at One Arts Plaza (1722 Routh Street) in downtown Dallas.
- 5:30 p.m., the Barnes & Noble in Southlake is hosting two author book signing events: Richard Jadick (On Call in Hell: A Doctor's Iraq War Story) and Nick Popaditch (Once a Marine: An Iraq War Tank Commander's Inspirational Memoir of Combat, Courage, and Recovery, book trailer on YouTube).
- 6 p.m.-8 p.m., enjoy an opening reception for “Unified Field: The Border/Campo Unificado: La Frontera” by Beatriz Ezban in the Main Gallery and “Hanging with Boys and Little Cloths, a Photography Exhibit” by Pauline Stevens in the Multipurpose Room Gallery at the Latino Cultural Center (2600 Live Oak Street in Dallas).
- 8 p.m.-10 p.m., listen to blues duo Paul Harrington and Will “Smokey” Logg at One Arts Plaza (1722 Routh Street) in downtown Dallas.
- 10 a.m.-5 p.m., get some exercise and appreciate some art on the DADA Gallery Walk. 2 p.m.-4 p.m., meet at the McKinney Avenue Contemporary for a tour sponsored by the Dallas Opera.
- 11 a.m., watch the Mexican Independence Day Parade in downtown Fort Worth.
- 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Target Second Saturdays at the Latino Cultural Center (2600 Live Oak Street in Dallas) bring lots to do for the whole family. 11 a.m.-12 p.m., children’s theater (Spanish); noon -1 p.m., Rondas y Bailes Infantiles; 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m., dance workshops TangoThon with Evolution Tango; 1 p.m.-4 p.m., clay workshop (spaces are limited, registration is required); 2 p.m.-4 p.m., the movie "El Abuelo", courtesy of the Embassy of Spain in Washington and the Honorary Consulate of Spain in Dallas. - noon-9 p.m., West End is hosting the second annual Italian Street Festival. Enjoy live music, food, cars, dancers, fashion, and a spaghetti-eating contest.
- 1 p.m., meet Debi Derryberry (the voice of Jimmy Neutron) at Borders Books (5615 Colleyville Blvd) in Colleyville. Debi will perform a concert for children ages 2-6 and sign copies of her book, “Baby Banana and the Licorice Tree”.
- 2 p.m., kids can learn the art of the yo-yo, spinning top, and Diablo with Valeria Oliver at NorthPark Center.
- 3 p.m.-10 p.m., celebrate Mexican Independence Day at Urban Taco in Mockingbird Station with folkloric music, mariachis, and new food creations from their menu. Trio Musical Norteno will perform 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
- 6 p.m.-8 p.m., appreciate some more art at the opening reception of Jorge Martinez's Photographs at the Ice House Cultural Center (1004 W. Page Street) in Oak Cliff.
- noon-6 p.m., Teco Theatrical Productions celebrates the grand opening of the Bishop Arts Theater Center (215 South Tyler Street in Dallas) with a street festival featuring live music, performers, and plays.

- 7:30 p.m., the Dallas Cowboys play on the big screens at the Granada Theater (3524 Greenville Avenue) in Dallas. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Show up twenty minutes before kickoff and the first beer is free.
- 7:30 p.m., watch “Moulin Rouge” at the Inwood Theatre (5458 West Lovers Lane at Inwood in Dallas).
- 7 p.m., watch “The King and I” starring Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr at the Magnolia Theatre in Dallas.
- 10:30 a.m., Ms. Maria will entertain kids with puppets, music, games, and more at NorthPark Center.
- 8 p.m.-10 p.m., St. Paul's Jazz Band performs at One Arts Plaza (1722 Routh Street) in downtown Dallas.
