Free Stuff To Do in Dallas

Here's a smattering of free stuff to do in Dallas and the surrounding area for Nov 6-12:

Thu, Nov 6
  • 5 p.m.-10 p.m., the Bishop Arts District has its monthly First Thursday event. Shops stay open late and offer discounts. Some have wine and cheese set out. The Bishop Arts District centers around the intersection of Davis and Bishop streets in Dallas, south of I-30 and west of I-35.
  • 5 p.m., meet children's author Jan Brett at Borders Bookstore (10720 Preston Road in Dallas).
  • 6 p.m.-8 p.m., attend an opening reception for the political quilt exhibit at the Women's Museum in Fair Park in Dallas. Partisan Pieces: Quilts of Political and Patriotic Persuasion will show how women voiced their political affiliations and opinions before they had the right to vote. The event and admission to the museum are free during this event.
Fri, Nov 7
  • noon, Richard Nunez will paint live at the Barnes & Noble at Southlake Town Square (1430 Plaza Place in Southlake).
  • 5 p.m.-close, enjoy First Fridays at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth in the Fort Worth Cultural District with live music by the Sam Walker Trio.
  • Legacy Books (7300 Dallas Parkway in Plano), an independent bookstore, is celebrating its grand opening all week with author appearances, raffles, giveaways, and children's activities.
Sat, Nov 8
  • 10 a.m., Peter Rabbit will attend a children's storytime at the Barnes & Noble at the Shops at Highland Village (4100 Deer Creek in Highland Village).
  • 10 a.m., children's author Ricky Pittman will be at a musical and literary children's party at the Barnes& Noble at University Park Village (1612 S. University Drive in Fort Worth).
  • 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., the Dallas Opera is hosting a series of live performances, talks, previews of this opera season, and ballroom dance lessons at One Arts Plaza (1722 Routh Street in downtown Dallas).
  • 11 a.m.-4 p.m., enjoy Target Second Saturdays at the Latino Cultural Center with theater, storytime, dance, song, crafts, and a movie, “Astronauta”.
  • 1 p.m., mystery author Mario Hill will sign her latest novel at the Barnes & Noble at Creekwalk Village (801 West 15th Street in Plano).
  • 1 p.m., learn the art of calligraphy at the Crow Collection of Asian Art.
  • 2 p.m., meet local history author James Lee at the Barnes & Noble at Preston and Park (2201 Preston Road in Plano).
  • 2 p.m., kids can enjoy world music and make some of their own at NorthPark Center.
Sun, Nov 9
  • Legacy Books (7300 Dallas Parkway in Plano), an independent bookstore, is celebrating its grand opening all week with author appearances, raffles, giveaways, and children's activities. 2 p.m., meet author Adam Jones (Rose Bowl Dreams).
Mon, Nov 10

Tue, Nov 11
  • 6:30 p.m., learn the art of zen meditation at the Crow Collection of Asian Art. Dress comfortably.
  • 7 p.m.-8 p.m., hear the true story of the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamen at the J. Erik Jonsson branch of the Dallas Public Library. (1515 Young Street in downtown Dallas, across from City Hall).
Wed, Nov 12
  • 10:30 a.m., ballerina Amanda Dalton leads children through simple dance moves at NorthPark Center.
  • 7 p.m.-9 p.m., listen to St. Paul's Jazz Band at One Arts Plaza (1722 Routh Street).
