I'm watching the Nascar race on TV and one of their bottom-of-the-screen promos was about Ask.com -- asking "What four foods is Texas famous for?" We got chili and barbecue, but got stuck on which Tex-Mex dish Texas is famous for. It turns out the entire Tex-Mex cuisine is one famous dish.
The fourth one is chicken fried steak. I guess I thought that was a Southern dish and not particularly Texan, but it's all good.
For beverages, they have sweet tea (although they called it iced tea with sugar), Mexican beer, and -- my personal favorite -- margaritas. Nary a mention of Shiner Bock in there. Ah, well.

Having grown up in Texas, I would say that Chicken Fried Steak, or CFS as it is known in the state, is the national food of Texas. Nothing wrong with chili, Tex-Mex or barbeque, but CFS is found just about anywhere in the state.
That’s a good point. It is just about everywhere in the state. Now I’m thinking of CFS with cream gravy. Actually, I’m thinking of the cream gravy. The steak is just to hold it.
