Cool, Inexpensive Ways to Live Through Hot Temps

nullIt's hot, DFW. And it's only June.

Right now the temperature is 97 degrees. Factor in the 32 percent relative humidity and it feels more like 101.  The only thing working in our favor right now is the little breeze (10-20 mph). Without the wind it might seem more like 110!

Need to chill? Despite budget cuts and renovations, there are still some public pools open in DFW. Dallas has seven public pools open right now. That number is down from past years but the fee to go there is very small. It will likely be crowded too.

Because of major budget cuts, six of the seven Fort Worth public swimming pools will not open in 2010. The Parks and Community Services Department is only operating one pool, the Forest Park Pool, 2850 Park Place, 76110 this summer. And the hours are only 1 - 7 p.m. The FW pool will be closed on July 2 due to a city furlough day. But FW has contracted to open some YMCA/Fort Worth pools to the public June 5.

Dallas has several sprayparks open and best of all, it's free. A spraypark is a type of park where water shoots up out of the ground and streams from pipes and spouts, bubbles up from the ground or falls from waterfalls.  The water is extremely shallow -- no deeper than a puddle -- so it's safe for kids (and adults) of all ages. There's also a fun spraypark in Arlington.

At this point, we can only look forward to the chance of isolated thunderstorms by the middle of next week for a break in this tropical heat wave. And winter.
