Celebrate National Iced Tea Day

Happy National Iced Tea Day, DFW. Did you even know that this was even a holiday? Now I love fireworks, turkey, easter eggs and pumpkins. I'll fly my flag on most any holiday and plan a barbecue around it. I buy Valentine's Day candy for teachers and bus drivers.

But I did not know Iced Tea had it's own day of celebration. Well why not? It has to be the most popular caffeinated cold drink, right?  Nothing tastes better on a hot, Texas day than a glass of iced tea. It's only 90 degrees right now but it feels like 100 with Dallas' extremely high humidity. So even though it's overcast in parts of DFW, it's still perfect weather to celebrate this wonderful beverage.

Let's see. There's Nestea, Lipton, Tetley, Celestial Seasonings and Luzianne. Snapple and Arizona bottle it and make it easy for you to drink iced tea on-the-go. I personally love The Republic of Tea brand. It's served in a lot of restaurants. They make a Ginger Peach Decaf Black tea that is worth the asking price.

Drink to Your Health
Tea is supposed to be good for you too. Various studies have found that tea is rich in the plant substances known as flavonoids. These can function as powerful antioxidants -- neutralizing free radicals known to damage cells and lead to diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Black, green and oolong teas may all help protect against numerous types of cancers, according to many studies. In addition, by inhibiting the absorption of cholesterol in the digestive tract, tea may help prevent the formation of unwanted clots which may cause a heart attack or stroke.

Not Your Grandma's Tea
So tea can be refreshing and healthy. The Frisco Bar even sells a drink made from iced-tea flavored vodka. After doing some research, I'd have to say that this drink is one that could easily get you in trouble because it's so refreshing. It just tastes like a good glass of iced tea. Tony, TFB's manager, said that the tea-infused vodka is simply mixed with water. Served over ice with a lemon, it's called Sweet Tea Vodka, and believe me when I say that this popular beverage isn't your Grandma's tea. But even this adult beverage is still healthy. Right? More research needed here. I'll get right on it.

So however you decide to enjoy National Iced Tea Day, enjoy!
