For lovers of independent and foreign films, the Angelika is a great place to go. An array of award-winning movies have shown at this cinema.

The cost is $9.25 for adults, $7 before 5pm. Students and seniors, $6.50; children under 12, $6. Prices change, so check the Angelika web site before you go or call (214)841-4700.

The Food

The Cafe at the Angelika Film Center is open to the public, even without the purchase of a theater ticket. Light fare, but hearty enough to satisfy, is offered in the cafe. Sandwiches (ham and cheese, chicken salad, roast beef, and egg salad) served with chips, cookies, brownies, and banana nut bread, and other delicious food is available to eat in the cafe or take into the theaters.

A full selection of beer (I picked a Shiner for $4) and wine (red and white for $7-$8.50) give the moviegoer plenty of choices. For those who prefer non-alcoholic beverages, the cafe carries a variety of soft drinks, coffees, teas, and other drinks.

The Theatres

The Angelika specializes in independent and foreign films, although the occasional big-ticket Hollywood blockbuster gets in. With eight theatres, the Angelika always has several films showing. The theatres themselves are roomy with comfortable seating. The padded arms fold up to get out of your way or down to hold your beer.

Events

Themed events provide a change from the usual movie experience. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the theatres are set up for parents who want to watch movies without worrying about fussy kids. Mondays and Thursdays, popular television programs are shown in HD on the big screen. Once a month, a romance classic plays and discounts on wine are offered. The theaters are also available for rent for organizations or corporate groups.
