In the spring of 1901 the Texas Legislature decided that we needed an official state flower. After serious consideration, the Lupinus subcarnosus was chosen. But technically there were different varieties of bluebonnets throughout the state, so the state flower also includes the Lupinus texensis, Lupinus Havardii, Lupinus concinnus and Lupinus plattensis.
