Dallas' Cortez Shaw Makes the Top 40 American Idol 2013

Cortez Shaw, 21, is dreaming the dream as a contestant on American Idol. He has currently survived the cuts and made it into the Top 40.

In Vegas, he sang Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You." Despite negative comments from the judges, they apparently saw his potential and are allowing him to continue on the journey.

After his performace, judge Nicki Minaj said, “I honestly felt you did a poor job at that song, and I was very, very disgusted by it.”

Randy Jackson wasn't a fan either, stating: “You ain’t Whitney.”

Wow. That's some harsh criticism for even a young 21-year-old. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Twenty girls and 20 guys were selected to perform on stage of Cirque du Soleil’s Beatles LOVE Theatre at The Mirage in Las Vegas. In week one, 5 girls were cut and 5 guys were cut. The remainder, including Cortez, will sing for their lives this week.

American Idol airs on Wednesdays and Thursdays on Fox4 at 7 p.m.

Good Company: 2012 Idols from DFW

Don't forget that back in 2012, DFW residents Hollie Cavanagh and Baylie Brown make top 24. Cavanagh went on to make it to the Top 4 before leaving American Idol Season 11.
