In the last decade, Dallas has put itself on the map with these internationally-known film festivals. If you're an aspiring filmmaker, check the web sites of the film festivals to find out how and when to submit your film. Aspiring actors can check Short Film Texas to find casting calls.

Dallas Video Festival

Nov 6-9, 2008. A film festival to celebrate video as a creative art form is held at the Angelika Film Center and Dallas Theater Center.

Out Takes Dallas Film Festival

Nov 13, Dec 11 2008; Jan 8, Feb 12, Mar 12, Apr 9, May 14, Jun 11, Jul 9, Aug 13, and Sept 10, 2009. This annual lesbian and gay film festival focusing on films that are about or of interest to the gay and lesbian communities is trying a new format starting in late 2008. Rather than a week or weekend of films, every second Thursday on the month will be gay movie night. Feature-length films, shorts, and documentaries are interspersed with social events. The festival plays at the Magnolia Theatre in the West Village.

Lone Star International Film Festival

Nov 12-16, 2008. The Lone Star Film Society sponsors five days of films, panels, and parties at several venues in Fort Worth.

KidFilm Festival

Jan 24-25, 2009. The USA Film Festival sponsors this series of movies for kids. Both world premiere films and classics will be shown. Tickets are $3 for each movie. The festival is shown at the Angelika Film Center at Mockingbird Station. To get there, take Central Expressway and exit at Mockingbird Lane. Go east on Mockingbird and the station will be on your left. There is a large parking lot for DART's Park and Ride. Or take DART's Red Line or Blue Line to the Mockingbird Station.

Texas Black Film Festival

Feb 5-7, 2009. This film festival will showcase feature-length films, short films, and documentaries inspired by the African-American experience. The third annual Texas Black Film Festival will be held at the Studio Movie Grill in Addison. To get there, take the Dallas North Tollway north from Dallas and exit at Belt Line Road. Take a right on Belt Line and drive about a half mile to the intersection of Belt Line and Prestonwood. Studio Movie Grill will be on your right.

Oscar Night America Dallas

Feb 22, 2009. The Studio Movie Grill in Addison hosts the only Academy-sanctioned Oscar watching party in Dallas. Sponsored by the USA Film Festival, Oscar Night America Dallas serves as one of their chief fundraisers. Partygoers receive an official Academy Awards program and commemorative poster.

AFI Dallas

Mar 26-Apr 5, 2009. Over eleven days, the best American and foreign films will be shown at various venues around Dallas.

USA Film Festival

Apr 27-May 3, 2009. The annual USA Film Festival features the best in American and foreign film. Filmmakers and actors attend along with their films. The National Short Film and Video Competition is held during the week. Various venues host the individual movies.

QCinema

2009 dates announced soon. QCinema is held at the Rose Marine Theater at 1440 North Main Street in Fort Worth and other venues. Fort Worth's gay and lesbian international film festival.

Asian Film Festival

Sep 17-24, 2009 at the Magnolia Theatre in Dallas and at the Angelika in Plano. A complete schedule is available on the web site.
