Memorial Day was established in 1971 to honor our veterans. Each year we celebrate with barbecues and picnics, concerts and parades. Around Dallas, we have runs, symphonies, historic airplanes, and an all-out festival at the Dallas Arboretum. Memorial Day is on Monday, May 26 in 2008.
May 26, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Picnic at the Dallas Arboretum and enjoy Sara Hickman in concert from 1 p.m.-2 p.m. Create something special during their arts and crafts time 10 a.m.-2 p.m. A petting zoo and face painting will also be available.
May 26-28. The Dallas Symphony Orchestra performs three free concerts at various parks this weekend. Watch a variety of performers from country/bluegrass and rock musician to ballet folklorico dancers. The May 26 concert is 4 p.m.-9 p.m. at Flagpole Hill at 8007 E. Northwest Highway in Dallas, near White Rock Lake. From Central Expressway, take the Northwest Highway exit and go east. From 635, take the Northwest Highway exit and go west. The May 27 concert is 8 p.m.-9 p.m. at the Dallas Arboretum. The May 28 concert is 8 p.m.-9 p.m. at Exall Park at 3500 Bryan Street in Dallas, near Baylor Med Center. Take I-75 to the Ross Street exit. Go east on Ross Street 0.4 miles and turn right on McCoy.
May 26. The Ballpark at Arlington is having a run at 8:15 a.m. Registration is $30 and starts at 6:15 a.m.
May 26, 9 a.m. Musical performances, a parade of flags, and essays read by local students will be part of Plano's Memorial Day Observance held at the Plano Municipal Center at 1520 K Avenue in Plano.
May 31-Jun 1, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The Cavanaugh Flight Museum at 4572 Claire Chennault in Addison will have veteran military pilots speak on their experiences. The historic aircraft of the museum take to the skies. Admission for adults is $8 and for children 6-12 is $4.
May 24-26. The state of Texas holds a sales tax holiday each year over the Memorial Day weekend. The sales tax exemption applies to Energy Star appliances purchased during the three days (Saturday, May through Monday, May 26 in 2008) of the tax-free weekend, on the labor required to install them, and on the delivery, shipping, or handling charges.
Memorial Day Sales
Many stores will have sales over the Memorial Day weekend, often in conjunction with giveaways and entertainment.
Cabela's will be giving away a $1,000 gift card, a hunting trip, optics and GPS packages, and grilling aprons and will be having seminars and competitions over the weekend.
Malls around Dallas and Fort Worth will also have entertainment and discounts.
