Memorial Day was established in 1971 to honor our veterans. Each year we celebrate with barbecues and picnics, concerts and parades. Around Dallas, we have runs, symphonies, historic airplanes, and an all-out festival at the Dallas Arboretum. Memorial Day is on Monday, May 26 in 2008.
May 25, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Picnic at the Dallas Arboretum and enjoy Eddie Coker in concert at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
May 25, 8 p.m.-9 p.m. The Dallas Symphony Orchestra performs at Flagpole Hill at 8007 E. Northwest Highway in Dallas, near White Rock Lake. From Central Expressway, take the Northwest Highway exit and go east. From 635, take the Northwest Highway exit and go west. A fireworks display will follow.
May 23. The Ballpark at Arlington is hosting the American Heroes Run for the third year. Registration is $30 and starts at 7 a.m. The Lil Troop Run is at 8 a.m., followed by the 5k run/walk and 10k run at 8:30 a.m. At 10 a.m., the Memorial Day Tribute begins and includes an F16 flyover and an Apache helicopter flyover.
May 25, 8:30 a.m. Plano's Memorial Day Observance will be held at the Plano Municipal Center at 1520 K Avenue in Plano.
May 16-17, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The Cavanaugh Flight Museum at 4572 Claire Chennault in Addison will have veteran military pilots speak on their experiences. The historic aircraft of the museum take to the skies. Admission for adults is $8 and for children 6-12 is $4.
May 23-25. The state of Texas holds a sales tax holiday each year over the Memorial Day weekend. The sales tax exemption applies to Energy Star appliances purchased during the three days (Saturday, May 24 through Monday, May 26 in 2008) of the tax-free weekend, on the labor required to install them, and on the delivery, shipping, or handling charges.
Memorial Day Sales
Many stores will have sales over the Memorial Day weekend, often in conjunction with giveaways and entertainment.
Cabela's will be giving away a $1,000 gift card, a hunting trip, optics and GPS packages, and grilling aprons and will be having seminars and competitions over the weekend.
Malls around Dallas and Fort Worth will also have entertainment and discounts.
May 25, 10 a.m. Grand Prairie's Memorial Day ceremony will be held at the Veterans Memorial at 925 Conover Drive.
May 25, noon-4 p.m. A Memorial Day Classic Car Show will be held at Lynn Smith Chevrolet at 925 N. Burleson Blvd in Burleson.
May 24, 7p.m. The Richardson Community Band will hold their annual Memorial Day Concert on the lawn of the Richardson Civic Center (900 Civic Center Drive) in Richardson. Bring lawn chairs, blankets, and a picnic.
