Texas State Board of Education

by Heather Carr
for About.com

The Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) is a fifteen-member elected body whose purpose is to establish policies and set standards for Texas public schools and to mandate instruction in the knowledge and skills essential to a well-balanced curriculum. The SBOE also oversees the Permanent School Fund, which provides money to Texas public schools through investments and rentals, royalties, and sales of public lands.
Meetings:

The SBOE holds meetings of the full board at least once each quarter. These meetings are open to the public, except for certain executive sessions. Committees meet more often and draft policies and standards. The committee then sends copies of the completed policies and standards documents to all the other members of the board at least one full week before the board meets to vote. Details of the procedures for presenting a proposal are posted online under Operating Rules.

Meetings of the full board in 2009 are scheduled for Jan 22-23, Mar 26-27, May 21-22, Jul 16-17, Sep 17-18, and Nov 19-20, 2009.

Online Archives:
Current agendas and schedules can be found on the SBOE web site. Archived audio files of the meetings are also on the SBOE web site.
