The beginning of the rodeo is one big pageant, where flag-carrying riders in satin and sequins lead the way. Community leaders, stock show officials, and competitors follow on their own horses, weaving between the standard bearers and filling the entire arena.
After the grand entry ends, bareback bronc riding begins. Competitors riding bucking horses without saddles try to hang on for eight seconds. Judges award points based on how the cowboy rides -- toes out, feet forward, one hand free and not touching anything, not even his hat -- and on how difficult the horse makes the ride with its bucking, twisting, and turning.
