January Events Calendar for Dallas-Fort Worth

Out with the old, in with the new. Make a new year's resolution to have more fun in DFW! I did. And I'll provide some fun options for your social calendar.

Did you get a calendar for Christmas? I hear that people still give those as gifts! Mark your calendar (digital or literal) with these upcoming events.

1. January 1: Eat Black-Eyed Peas

Everyone could use a little good luck in 2013. Start the year off right by enjoying some tasty good-luck lentils at DFW restaurants. I'll be eating them for lunch anddinner!

2. January 4: The Cotton Bowl

Don't be confused. The Cotton Bowl is no longer played in the Cotton Bowl Stadium located in Dallas. No, it's now played in the death star -- aka Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

What: Texas A&M vs. Oklahoma. 9 am - Cowboys Stadium Pro Shop and Stadium Box Office opens; 2 pm - Parking lots open; 3 pm - Plazas open; 5 pm - Cowboys Stadium gates open; 7 pm - 77th AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic Kickoff.

When: January 4, 2013. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Where: Cowboys Stadium in Arlington

3. Elvis Month at El Ranchito

The King lives! El Ranchito has Elvis fever and is dedicating every Wednesday during the month of January to the King. Elvis Month kicks off with impersonator Kraig Parker, who has been referred to as the ultimate image of Elvis Presley. Catch the tribute show at 7:30 p.m. for $10 on January 9 and again on January 23. Then put on your blue suede shoes on January 16 and January 30 for El Ranchito’s Elvis Contest. For $5, guests can rock out as more than 20 contestants compete for the best Elvis-like croons and hip swivels to win a cash prize.

4. January 5: The POWERADE NCAA Youth Clinics

The POWERADE NCAA Youth Clinics are open to boys and girls ages 7-14 at 9 a.m. on January 5th at the FC Dallas Practice Fields adjacent to the main stadium. The POWERADE NCAA Youth Clinics will be managed by USA Football and former NFL players. Participants will receive sport instruction, get valuable information on fitness, healthy lifestyles and sportsmanship. This is a free event, but registration is encouraged. Limited walk up registration is available beginning at 8 a.m. on game day. No equipment or experience required.

5. January 5: Comic Book Show Dallas with The Incredible Hulk Lou Ferrigno

Comic Book Show Dallas w/ The Incredible Hulk Lou Ferrigno Saturday, January 5, 2013 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Doubletree Dallas Market Center, Dallas, TX. Meet internationally-known actor and star of the Incredible Hulk TV series, Lou Ferrigno in Dallas. The two day Dallas comic book show will feature over 40 quality dealers. 6. January 6: Bridal Show - Irving

The Bridal Show in Irving is January 6, 2013 from noon to 5 p.m. More than 100 wedding vendors will be present. Doorprizes and giveaways. Admission is $8 adults, $4 for children 14 and under (including toddlers and infants). Cash only and no video/cameras allowed. Irving Convention Center, 500 W. 7. January 20: Create a Snowflake at the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge

Sunday, January 20, 2013 at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Create a Snowflake: Every snowflake is unique in its own way. There are no two that are identical. Bring the kids out for a fun filled learning experience about these winter beauties. Each child will be able to make their very own snowflake to take home with them! Free with paid admission.

8. January 18 - February 9: Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo

What: 2013 Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. It's great rodeo action, world-class livestock shows, kid-friendly exhibits, daily live music, terrific food, carnival midway, four acres of unique daily shopping and more. No matter what the weather is, you're guaranteed a unique shopping experience. Many items are western-themed but you'll find everything under the sun here. 

When: January 18, 2013 through February 9, 2013. The "All Western Parade" is Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 11 a.m. in downtown Fort Worth.

9. January 26-27: Dallas Bridal Show

January 26-27, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Dallas Market Hall, I-35 and Market Center Blvd., Dallas, TX. Admission: $12 Adults, $6 Children Age 14 and Under.

The Dallas Bridal Show is the third largest bridal show in the United States and the largest bridal show in the Metroplex with over 300 wedding businesses, ranging from the first steps of planning your wedding to the honeymoon. This incredible bridal event showcases bridal party fashions daily, amazing prizes are given away including a diamond ring from Dallas Gold & Silver, and more.

10. January 19: Texas Rangers Winter Caravan

The Texas Rangers Winter Caravan will visit Dr Pepper Ballpark on Saturday, January 19th. Several Rangers players including Craig Gentry, Derek Holland, David Murphy, Tanner Scheppers, and Frisco manager Steve Buechele are scheduled to appear and interact with fans and sign a limited number of autographs (players that appear are subject to change).

RoughRiders fans can also take this opportunity to choose a ticket plan and select their seats for the upcoming 2013 season in addition to getting autographs. Gates will open at 1:15pm and RoughRiders sales staff will be on hand to assist fans.

Deuce and Captain, the lovable mascots for both teams, will be at the event to meet fans and take pictures. Fans can also enjoy hot dogs and beverages on sale at the concession stand.

When: 1:30pm to 3:00pm (Autograph session in JCPenney Club & Luxury Lounge)

11. Jan 26-27: Lewisville Gun Show

If you're into guns, knives and ammo you won't want to miss the Lewisville Gun Show. It's held Janyary 26-27, 2013 at the Lewisville Event Center, 2460 Stemmons, (Exit 448) Lewisville, Texas 75067. It's located across from Vista Ridge Mall behind Saltgrass Steakhouse. 817-722-1194.

Hours are Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission: General Admission – $8, cash only; Weekend Passes – $12, cash only; Children under 12 – free; Uniformed Peace Officers – free.

12. DFW Festivals

There are a number of festivals going on in DFW in January. Have some fun! I think Zest Fest sounds like a winner. The Texas Rangers Fan Fest may be lacking a few players at this point since the departure of Josh Hamilton, Mike Napoli and Michael Young.
