Guide Review - Savor Dallas Victory Park Celebration

The annual Savor Dallas Victory Park Celebration Friday night was fantastic. Despite the cold, quite a crowd gathered in the AT&T Plaza to sample food from the Victory Park restaurants and taste wines from around the world. Whether it was the good food or the flowing wine, everyone was companionable. Conversation sprang up spontaneously in the lines.

All the wines were good. I would stop by a wine table with a plate of food and ask that the server select a wine to complement whatever I was about to eat. They always picked the right one. Depending on an expert is never a bad idea. A few tables had spirits and mixers. By far the most interesting was Dry Soda, which works equally well as a soft drink or as a mixer. It comes in four flavors: lavender, kumquat, rhubarb, and lemongrass. I found kumquat a bit sweet and rhubarb didn't seem quite like rhubarb, but lavender hit a perfect note with its light sweetness and novel flavor.

I stopped at all the food tables and loved every bite. Luna de Noche. my first stop, served tortilla chips with lightly spicy green and red salsas and a crab dip with fresh avocado (scooped out of the peel right in front of me). Kenichi set out a full plate of fresh sushi rolls for each guest. N9NE steakhouse served up a mini-cheeseburger that was just fabulous -- and this at the end of the evening when my tastebuds should have been fatigued -- accompanied by shoestring fries.

The crew at La Condesa planned well for the frigid temperatures, dishing up a delicious, hot, spicy, tomatoey soup that restored the feeling in my fingers as I held the bowl. Definitely the best dessert of the evening came from Paciugo Gran Caffe, a relative newcomer to Victory Park. Their wedding cake gelato tasted like the real thing, except lighter and, of course, chillier.
