Azaleas at Dallas Blooms

Every spring for more than twenty years, the Dallas Arboretum has put on a display of hundreds of thousands of spring-blooming bulbs and thousands more annuals and perennials. Each year has a different theme. 2008 had the theme "Star of Texas". Other recent themes have included "Flower Power" (2007), "Eiffel Flower" (2006) with a fifteen-foot-tall topiary replica of the Eiffel Tower, "Proud as a Peacock" (2005) with two fifteen-foot-tall topiary peacocks, and "Windmills of Color" (2003) showing off Dutch bulbs and traditions.

The annual celebration showcases both new and old favorites and remarkable examples of garden design. Special displays, such as the fashion show in the DeGolyer House in 2007, complement the gardens and concerts and performances are scheduled for most days. Crafts on the weekends and a special children's area with a petting zoo, face painting, and games make this a great festival for families.

Dining at the arboretum is delightful. The Slaughter Dining Terrace is right near the entrance and offers a full menu of entrees and lighter fare. The DeGolyer Garden Cafe is near the elegant Woman's Garden. Have a full tea (a light meal) on the patio. For picnic food, you can bring your own or order sandwiches and other picnic fare at the Tent on the Paseo, located on the Paseo de Flores.
