February Festivals

by Heather Carr
for About.com

February enters the slightly warmer, but still blustery season. Most of these festivals are indoors, so the weather -- whatever it may be -- doesn't matter much.

Texas Black Film Festival

Feb 5-7. This film festival will showcase feature-length films, short films, and documentaries inspired by the African-American experience. The third annual Texas Black Film Festival will be held at the Studio Movie Grill in Addison. To get there, take the Dallas North Tollway north from Dallas and exit at Belt Line Road. Take a right on Belt Line and drive about a half mile to the intersection of Belt Line and Prestonwood. Studio Movie Grill will be on your right.

Valentine's Day

Feb 9-17. Dallas is romantic at any time of year, but during Valentine's season, there's even more ways to woo. Check out these ideas for romance, whether you prefer a fancy Valentine's date or something a little more low-key (but still quite sweet).

Mardi Gras DFW

Feb 21. Doors open at noon. Eighteen country bands on four stages perform to celebrate Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras DFW will be held inside the Automobile Building at Fair Park, so it will not be cancelled or delayed on account of weather. Tickets cost $45 at the door. Advance purchases at Kroger cost $37.50.

Mystiqal

Feb 21, 5 p.m.-11 p.m. Downtown Dallas will transform into a New Orleans-style Mardi Gras with a street festival opening at 5 p.m., a run at 5:30 p.m., and a parade at 6:30 p.m. with lots of beads and coins thrown to the crowd, and live entertainment. The parade route starts at Main and Ervay in downtown Dallas, heads down Main Street, turns right at Lamar, and ends at West End Marketplace. Entry is free. The atmosphere will be authentic Mardi Gras, so there will be no children's activities. No need to drive; take DART's Red Line or Blue Line to the Akard or West End stations.

Oscar Night America Dallas

Feb 22. The Studio Movie Grill hosts the only Academy-sanctioned Oscar watching party in Dallas. Sponsored by the USA Film Festival, Oscar Night America Dallas serves as one of their chief fundraisers. Tickets are $45 and $75 and include dinner and a champagne toast.
