If your kids are older, you might consider these Dallas-area festivals.
Apr 1-30. Ennis Bluebonnet Trails start at Pierce Park, Ennis Avenue at Main Street in downtown Ennis.
Apr 4-5. In conjunction with the races at Texas Motor Speedway, Chevy team NASCAR drivers make an appearance at the Stockyards Station in Fort Worth. Kids can try their hand at the Pit Crew Challenge and other interactive games. Admission is free.
April 5-6. Sat 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sun noon-5 p.m. Enjoy traditional Japanese dance, music, art, and tea ceremonies in the Japanese Garden. Admission to the Japanese Garden costs $4 for adults, $2 for children 4-12, and free for children under four. The Japanese Garden is one of many themed gardens inside the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, located at 3220 Botanic Garden Boulevard in Fort Worth. To get there, take I-30 west from Dallas to the University Drive exit. Turn left on University Drive. The Botanic Garden is on the left immediately.
Apr 5-27. Earth Day, April 22, is a time to remind ourselves to live lightly on the planet. Several celebrations are happening around the area this year.
Apr 12. Taste homemade chili and watch more pickled quail eggs get eaten than you ever knew existed at Traders Village, 2602 Mayfield Road in Grand Prairie.
April 17-20. I highly recommend this annual arts festival featuring several blocks of juried art displays, live music, street performers, and food. The Main Street Arts Festival is held on Main Street in downtown Fort Worth between Weatherford Street and Ninth Street. Friday and Saturday, take the
TRE to the Fort Worth ITC station and walk up the hill. Main Street will be well-marked.
April 18-20. The Bluebonnet Trails Festival will be held at Pierce Park, West Ennis Avenue at Northwest Main Street in Ennis.
Apr 19-20. A kite competition and kite sales will be at Valley Ridge Park, 2850 Park Ridge Drive in Cedar Hill.
Apr 19-May 11. View new and expanded animal exhibits, watch dance troupes, meet superheroes and sports stars on Saturdays and Sundays at the Dallas Zoo, 650 S. R.L. Thornton Freeway. The Dallas Zoo has its very own DART station on the
Red Line.
