Kid-Friendly Festivals in April

Looking for something to do with the kids? These kid-friendly festivals have something for all ages.

If your kids are older, you might consider these Dallas-area festivals.

Ennis Bluebonnet Trails

Apr 1-30. Ennis Bluebonnet Trails start at Pierce Park, Ennis Avenue at Main Street in downtown Ennis.

Chevy Thunder Days

Apr 4-5. In conjunction with the races at Texas Motor Speedway, Chevy team NASCAR drivers make an appearance at the Stockyards Station in Fort Worth. Kids can try their hand at the Pit Crew Challenge and other interactive games. Admission is free.

Prairie Dog Chili Cookoff

Apr 4. Taste homemade chili at Traders Village, 2602 Mayfield Road in Grand Prairie.

Fort Worth Main Street Arts Festival

April 16-19. I highly recommend this annual arts festival featuring several blocks of juried art displays, live music, street performers, and food. The Main Street Arts Festival is held on Main Street in downtown Fort Worth between Weatherford Street and Ninth Street. Friday and Saturday, take the TRE to the Fort Worth ITC station and walk up the hill. Main Street will be well-marked.

Dallas Children's Book Fair and Literacy Festival

Apr 17-18. Ten authors and illustrators of children's books will start the festival with a read-in at the Dallas Public Library's Central Branch (1515 Young Street in downtown Dallas, across from City Hall) 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Friday. Friday evening, 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m., at the African-American Museum in Fair Park, there will be a Author and Sponsors Party. The festival continues Saturday at the Dallas Public Library's Central Branch 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Bluebonnet Trails Festival

April 17-19. The Bluebonnet Trails Festival will be held at Pierce Park, West Ennis Avenue at Northwest Main Street in Ennis.

Spring Festival in the Japanese Garden

April 18-19. Sat 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sun noon-5 p.m. Enjoy traditional Japanese dance, music, art, and tea ceremonies in the Japanese Garden. Admission to the Japanese Garden costs $4 for adults, $2 for children 4-12, and free for children under four. The Japanese Garden is one of many themed gardens inside the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, located at 3220 Botanic Garden Boulevard in Fort Worth. To get there, take I-30 west from Dallas to the University Drive exit. Turn left on University Drive. The Botanic Garden is on the left immediately.

Earth Day Festivals

Earth Day, April 22, is a time to remind ourselves to live lightly on the planet. Several celebrations are happening around the area this year.

Dallas Roars!

Apr 18-May 10. View new and expanded animal exhibits, watch dance troupes, meet superheroes and sports stars on Saturdays and Sundays at the Dallas Zoo, 650 S. R.L. Thornton Freeway. The Dallas Zoo has its very own DART station on the Red Line.

Flowercade

Apr 25-26. The Fort Worth Garden Club Council will display dazzling floral arrangements and horticultural delights at the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens.
