Connect Your Utilities Online

by Heather Carr
for About.com

Do you dread driving around to the electric company, then the water company, then the phone company, and so forth, just to get your new home ready to live in? Have no fear. Now you can connect most utilities and services online with one web site. The service is free and I found it quite helpful.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 5 - 20 minutes

Here's How:

  1. Open a browser window and type https://www.2turniton.com/ into the address bar. Or click on this link for 2TurnItOn.

  2. Enter your zip code.

  3. Are you a residential or a business customer? If this is the home you or someone will live in, you are most likely a residential customer. Select the one that applies to you.

  4. Click "Go".

  5. If the zip code you are in extends over more than one city, the next page will ask you to select your city. Click the button next to the correct city and select "Go".

If the zip code you entered is only in one city, you will not see this page.

  6. The next page, “Select Services”, will ask you which utilities you want to turn on: electricity, internet, local phone, satellite or cable television, voice over IP, water, and maybe more, depending on your area. It's also possible that not all the utilities can be turned on over the internet. In that case, the option will not appear.

Click on the image of the utility you want to turn on. Just one. We'll come back later and get the rest.

  7. The site shows columns to compare your options, including deposits (if any), monthly cost, and so forth. Push the “Select” button on your preferred option.

  8. You'll return to the "Select Services" page that you were on in Step Six. Now you can select the next utility you want to turn on.

  9. Continue repeating steps six and seven until you have all the utilities and services you need.

  10. When you're done, click the “I'm Ready 2TurnItOn!” button.
