Guide Review - Oscar's Mexican Restaurant in Haltom City
Oscar's Mexican Restaurant in Haltom City serves up good Mexican food at a reasonable price. Lately moved into a new building, Oscar's has been a mainstay of Haltom City for nearly fifteen years. A small outdoor seating area has shade over it to protect waiting customers.
Inside, Oscar's is split into several rooms, with a main dining area in the center of the restaurant and a bar with dining tables and tall bar tables off to the left. To the right are smaller rooms good for wedding parties or other celebrations.
The menu offers all the staples of a Mexican restaurant in Texas -- tacos, tamales, flautas, fajitas, and so on. For vegetarians, Oscar's has squash, spinach, or mushroom enchiladas and Martha's veggie fajitas, all served with black beans and rice or salad. A grilled chicken sandwich and all-American hamburger are on the menu for those in the party not in the mood for Mexican food. Salad can be substituted for rice for dieters.
First to the table were tall glasses of water for each of us. Second came the tortilla chips, warm from the oven, and the individual bowls of salsa. I always hesitate to try an unknown salsa without a glass of water at the ready. The salsa here is fresh and flavorful, with a little spice, but not too much. The waiter arrived after we had eaten a few chips and took our order.
I ordered the fajita quesadillas with chicken ($9.99). A large plate arrived with two white flour tortillas holding the marinated grilled chicken breast and Monterrey Jack cheese. The buttery and tangy flavors melded perfectly. Generous dollops of sour cream, guacamole, and chopped lettuce and tomatoes came on the side. I also tried a red enchilada, where the enchilada sauce is a creamy tomato salsa.
Meal price ranges from $10-30 with soft drinks or iced tea. Credit cards accepted. Local catering service is available.
