Guide Review - TruFire Kitchen and Bar
You have to start with an appetizer. TruFire has the absolute best Hummus that I've ever tasted. It's freshly prepared and served with pita bread; you can also add raw veggies (carrot, cucumber, bell pepper slices) for a few dollars more. The Meatball Sliders are tasty and unique -- baked, flavorful meatballs on garlicky bread with cheddar cheese and tomato aioli and onions.
My friend and I both ordered the Mediterranean Shrimp Salad. It's one of the most popular items on the menu. It's an oversized plate of fresh spinach with red onion, cucumbers, orzo, flavorful shrimp with a mustard dill vinaigrette dressing. It's large enough to share. (Update: a smaller version of the salad is now on the menu).
The Texas Pecan and Fig Salad is another winner with organic greens, peppered sweet Texas pecans, bleu cheese, pear and house black mission fig dressing.
If you're interested in pizza, you have to try the Pepperoni and Meatball. The dough is made fresh daily and the crust is delicious. Meat lovers will think there's something special about the meatball and pepperoni combination. (Update: On my recent visit I sampled the Sauteed Spinach Pizza with applewood bacon, roasted garlic ricotta cheese, mozzarella, provolone, caramelized onions. It was very tasty and I didn't feel guilty because I was eating spinach!
Save Room for Dessert! If you have room for dessert, try the flourless chocolate cake with caramel chocolate mousse. It's sweet but not-too-sweet, chocolately and delicious. Warning: you may not want to share this (but I did).
Cocktails: Try the Black Splash. It's Hudson Ferus Vodka, sweetened strawberries, lemon and Balsamic vinegar. It's a slightly sweet but very flavorful cocktail. I think you'll like it - I certainly did. I believe I had seconds! Happy hour is from 4-7 p.m. daily.
The wine list is very reasonably priced and there's something for everyone. They have an excellent list of by-the-glass wines as well as bottles. I sampled the Syrah and it was fantastic so I ordered a glass.
One of my favorite little restaurant touches -- I love the large container of Andes Mints by the door. You're actually encouraged to grab a handful as you leave -- not just one or two. My daughter always goes through my purse to see if I have any mints from TruFire.
