Best Cupcakes in DFW

Let them eat cake! I don't think anything can replace the cupcake in terms of popularity. They're delicious. They're just the right size. They're affordable. Kids love them and they're perfect for birthday parties. I heard someone say that pie is the new cupcake. Absolutely no way.

Go ahead an indulge today. I won't tell your personal trainer.

Parents: the word "cupcake" is a behavior-turn-around word at our house. It might just be the perfect reward for good grades, good behavior, potty training or any other successful event! It's a magic word.

Didn't see your favorite cupcake here? Let us know. Maybe we haven't tasted it yet. Email me (include a photo!) at dallas@aboutguide.com or give me a shoutout on Twitter: PattersonAngela.

1. Dimples Cupcake Factory

I'm going to put my neck on the line and say that Dimples' Wedding Cake Cupcake is the best in DFW. If I need a sugar fix, Dimples is just the place to go. My best friend introduced me to the Wedding Cake Cupcake one day and it blew my mind. It was that good. It's the perfect combination of moist cake topped with sweet frosting (but not too sweet). I sampled one recently and it literally melted in my mouth.

Dimples is located in Frisco Square (home of the synchronized holiday light show across from Pizza Hut Park). It's a couple of doors down from Mattito's Tex-Mex.

The base menu consists of my personal favorite, the Wedding Cake Cupcake, plus red velvet, and cookies and cream. Additional flavors change on a daily basis.

Dimples Cupcake Factory, 8880 Coleman Blvd., Frisco, TX 75034. 214-494-4446

2. Casa Linda Bakery

Oh. My. Goodness. If you haven't been to Casa Linda Bakery, then you're missing out on a big piece of Dallas' history. Everything in this made-from-scratch bakery is delicious. From cupcakes to wedding cakes, cookies to homemade breads, it's worth the trip. I always stop by when visiting the Dallas Arboretum. (It's just down the street). Don't wait til closing time because they just might run out of your favorite dessert. Enjoy a sweet treat at 10819 Garland Rd., Dallas, TX 75218. 214-321-0551.

3. Sprinkles

Some people think Sprinkles is the end-all, beat-all cupcake. If you're a lover of all things Sprinkles, then you can either shop at their Dallas location or buy the mix and whip up a batch yourself. Can you decorate them to make them look  worthy of the Beverly Hills location? The kit even comes with the trademark modern dot. How cute is that? Find the Sprinkles Cupcakes mix at Williams-Sonoma locations for $14.95.

Sprinkles, 4020 Villanova Drive, Dallas, TX 75225. 214-369-0004.

4. The Cake Guys

Angela Patterson
I recently had the opportunity to sample several different cupcakes from The Cake Guys and let me say two words: German Chocolate.

Wow! Their German Chocolate Cupcake is amazing. I sampled several (ok, let's just say at least half a dozen -- bites, not entire cupcakes) sharing with two friends and I was blown away by the deliciousness of the German Chocolate cupcake. I loved the moist cake part (some can be dry) but the frosting was TDF (to die for). I love coconut on anything -- but when mixed with just the right amount of butter, brown sugar, pecans, secret ingredients -- the results is melt-in-your-mouth eurphoria.

My suggestion that is if you haven't tried the Cake Guys, make it a point to visit them soon. Make a special trip. They also Sample Saturdays where brides planning their wedding can shop, browse, ask questions and taste complimentary cake samples. Closed Sunday/Monday.

The Cake Guys, 3527 Oaklawn Avenue, Dallas, TX 75219. 214-219-2253.

5. Sugar Queen Cupcakes

Love them! These delicacies are only $2.75 or buy 5, get 1 free. They even have a cupcake bouquet. Everyday flavors include:

  • Sugar Queen Vanilla
  • Chocolate Chocolate Chip
  • Red Velvet
  • Berry Pecan
  • Birthday Cake
  • Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge

And then there are rotating daily specials. Mmm. Best of all, I like their policy. At the end of the business day, leftover cupcakes are given to local women's shelters, police/fire departments and other special folks who deserve a sweet treat. How suh-weet is that?!

The Shops at Willow Bend Mall, 6121 W. Park, Plano, TX 75093. 469-366-0682 Lower level next to Neiman Marcus.
Stonebriar Centre, 2601 Preston Road, Frisco, TX 75034.

6. J. Rae's Bakery

J. Rae's Bakery is located on West 7th in Fort Worth's Cultural District. You'll enjoy the cupcakes -- they're an absolute treat -- but they have more cookies to choose from than you can ever imagine. In a world of $3-4 cupcakes, you'll love that theirs are $2.50 or $28 per dozen. I love a value-packed dessert.

J. Rae's Bakery, 935 Foch Street, Fort Worth, TX 76107. 817-332-0090.

7. Frost It Cafe

I love their cupcakes (and everything else) at Frost It! This great bakery specializes in custom cakes, birthday cakes, cupcakes and more. You'll not only enjoy their cupcakes, but also their specialty bars, cookies and breakfast/lunch items. They even have a gluten-free menu.

8. The Cupcake Cottage

Sandra and Juaquin Bradshaw have the recipe for the perfect life. Open a bakery, bake 5 varieties of cupcakes daily, use only fresh ingredients, and close the shop when the last cupcake sells. That's a good business plan. The results are tasty but get there before the last one is gone. (You can call ahead and reserve your treats). Cupcakes are $2.45; babycakes 95 cents each. The Cupcake Cottage, 5015 El Campo Avenue, Fort Worth, TX. 817-732-5670.
