Cabela's bills itself as the world's foremost outfitter and it's easy to see why: Cabela's is a huge outdoors store located just north of Fort Worth. With two stories of merchandise, food, exhibits, and activities, it's easy to while away a few hours here. Cabela's offers a wide selection of hunting and fishing gear (including boats and blinds) and just about everything a person might need for camping, RVing, and outdoor sports.

Downstairs

Walking in the front door, the first thing you notice is the other end of the store: a rocky mountain with waterfalls cascading down the center and posed animals. African savannah, rocky mountains, and snowy arctic habitats showcase taxidermy mounts, many of which are record-holders. Historic camping and hunting equipment round out the scenes.

To the left is a bulletin board where anyone can post photos of their big catch. To the right, against the far wall of the store, are several huge aquariums with game fish, such as gar, bass, and carp. Some of the catfish in those tanks are larger than some people I know. Feeding times are posted on each tank. Live bait is sold near the aquariums.

Upstairs

Peruse through the fishing, boating, and watersports sections, and you will come out near the back of the store. Take one of the stairways to the top floor and enjoy the closer views of the animals. An elevator is located behind the stairs. Home furnishings lie to the far right. Closer at hand is the restaurant where you can try venison, elk, bison, or ostrich (or beef, chicken, or turkey) for $4 to $7 a plate. Sides, such as chips and chili, and drinks are offered, too. Pizza, hot dogs, and peanut butter and jelly is available for the kids. A small general store to one side of the food court sells jellies and jerkies and other food gifts and items.

Past trendy firepits and state-of-the-art grills, you will find the camping and RVing section with all the necessaries of RV living as well as nifty gadgets and gizmos you've never heard of. At the back of that section, a kids' area offers plush animals, games, and toys and a laser shooting range (wheelchair accessible).

And Back Downstairs

Back downstairs, shop through more hunting and archery supplies, and atv gear. The indoor archery range is at the very back of the store inside the archery area. The gun library lies toward the front of the store. Several checkout rows ensure there is rarely a line.

Clinics, demonstrations, and talks are available every weekend on a variety of topics. A recent weekend featured a talk on carp fishing, a clinic on fly casting, product demonstrations to help you choose the right depth finder, a how-to on predator calling, and a seminar on arrow building and fletching. Check their web site for dates and times.

Outside

Outside, the covered entryway provides a place to drop off passengers protected from the weather. A landscaped pond at the front hosts the occasional bird dog demonstration. Another water feature has bridges—which the kids seem to love—and a small amphitheater.

The vast parking lot features wide aisles and long spaces to fit your pickup truck and includes areas for RVs and semis. A dump station for RVers and picnic area gives travelers a place to relax. Dog kennels provide a safe place to leave your dog while you shop. (Never leave your dog in a closed car, even during cooler weather. Weather changes suddenly and cars can heat up fast.)
