Teenagers are already shopping for their back-to-school wardrobe. If they have a long Wish List and you have a small budget, then it's always a great idea to go shopping with them and buy the things they will actually wear. Jeans, graphic tee's, trendy-but-comfortable shoes and accessories are on everyone's must-have list.
Sometimes the parent needs to be the voice of reason. I've actually heard one Mom say, "I know it's the last one honey. But it's a size too small, so please don't waste your money on it." And other times parents need to just go with the trends and let the kiddo show his or her own unique, personal sense of style.
I remember back in the 80s when I wanted to wear rainbow suspenders (popularized by the TV show Mork and Mindy) and polos with a popped collar. Jordache made the jeans of that day and we called 'em "Horse head bookends" because the signature horse heads were stitched on each pocket. Enough said.
