Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) operates trains, buses, and HOV lanes in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. DART also offers help organizing carpools and vanpools. The mass transit system served nearly 100 million riders in 2005.
Light Rail
The Red and Blue light rail lines have a daily ridership of more than 60,000. Thirty-four rail stations along the DART lines allow easy access to many businesses, as well as shopping and entertainment districts, including such popular Dallas stops as Northpark Mall, Greenville Avenue, and American Airlines Center. The routes go nearly everywhere in the city and thirteen surrounding suburbs.
Destination Deals
DART Destination Deals offer discounts and incentives when you show your DART ticket valid for that day. Use the he web site lists all Destination Deals within a quarter mile of the rail stations or along certain routes connected to stations. Deals range from 10% off a retail purchase to buy one, get one free entree deals at restaurants.
A Brief History
- 1983: DART was voted into existence.
- 1984: DART officially began by taking over the operations of the Dallas Transit System. By the end of 1984, eleven cities outside Dallas had bus service into the city and between each other.
- 1986: Saw the beginning of van service for mobility-impaired riders. In
- 1990: The Division of Transit Public Safety program started, placing twenty-five peace officers on the buses to maintain peace.
- 1996: The light rail first opened.
The Future
DART plans to build more stations to extend the Red and Blue lines, as well as build a Green line to run from Carrollton through downtown Dallas to Pleasant Grove to be complete in 2010 and an Orange line to extend from downtown Dallas to DFW Airport to be complete in 2013.
